About Julie

Welcome!

Hi, I’m Julie.  I discovered for myself the benefits of yoga after experiencing a neck injury over 20 years ago. I had always been a physically active person and after the injury it became frustrating to live with constant pain as well as experiencing limited range of motion.  I tried conventional pain treatments to help alleviate the pain, and finally, as a last resort, I thought I’d give yoga a try since I kept hearing how great yoga was for pain relief. I admit, initially I resisted the idea, probably because of my preconceived ideas (and a few experiences) of what yoga was (or wasn’t), and also not wanting to sweat and breathe loudly next to a bunch of strangers who would be doing the same thing.  I decided to commit to a few weeks of yoga classes with an open mind. After a few classes I started feeling better physically. I had less pain. It almost felt like something inside me had “unstuck.” I realized I actually enjoyed yoga and looked forward to each class. One thing that became immediately clear was how much I realized I pushed myself in my everyday life, at work and at home. Yoga had awakened a feeling that had been dormant for a long time, a feeling of being in sync with myself rather than having to push myself all the time. It reminded me that It was ok to slow down a bit. With yoga, I was able to challenge myself and yet give myself permission to let go and simply flow with my body, enjoy the moment. This feeling started to seep into other parts of my life as well. Mentally, I felt more focused , present and connected. I found myself reacting less and becoming more self-aware. Yoga taught me the importance of proper breathing and how to bring simple practices into everyday life.   One of the most profound realizations for me was yoga reminds us that we are already whole, not someone or something that is broken and needs to be “fixed.” The word yoga itself means “to join or yoke, ” and it serves as a constant reminder to bring the body and mind together into one harmonious whole.

Yoga has helped me to bring balance into my life, especially during times of challenge. That is when the real work comes in and the practice is not always easy. Sometimes it’s downright tough. However, through practice, the teachings of yoga have helped me to know when to bring in effort and push through, and know when to relax and let go. That to me is the key - balancing effort and ease. These two qualities may seem like polar opposites, but yoga is all about uniting opposites. When I’m able to cultivate the two opposites of effort and ease, I feel a healthy balance of stabillty, strength, flexibilty, comfort. and joy.
